Teachers presented this assignment to 5th grade classes. Essays to be finished and submitted to our club at the beginning of May. Essays are graded by members of Hi-CREW Kiwanis Club.
In the essay titled “Helping Others” students describe why a charity of their choice should be awarded a $100 donation from the Hi-CREW Kiwanis Club. The 1st place winner from the school will read their essay at the end of year school assembly. The essay contest winner will present the check to a charity representative at the assembly.
The winner is selected based upon the most compelling appeal for funds to the charity of the student’s choice. Preference is given to local charities where money donated by our club is used in the Greater Cedar Rapids community.
We think this is a wonderful project that promotes literacy, empathy, and philanthropy. We started with a $100 donation for the winner and two $25 donations for the honorable mentions. We hope to increase the donation if we can raise more money.
The end of the year assembly fills the lunch room.
Mr. C reads the winning essay.
